In the fourth quarter of 2023, YouTube, Google’s video streaming network, erased more than 9 million videos worldwide. In the same time period, YouTube removed 2.25 million videos in India, making it the country with the most video removals on the platform at the time. Bangladesh placed eighth globally, with 152,051 videos banned for failing to follow YouTube’s community guidelines.
A major component of this moderation effort is the dependence on technology, specifically machine learning, which was responsible for identifying more than 96% of the films that were finally banned. This demonstrates the usefulness of artificial intelligence in detecting probable policy infractions. Furthermore, more than 53% of these videos were removed before gaining any views, demonstrating YouTube’s capacity to prevent the spread of harmful content.
During the same quarter, the platform deleted nearly 20 million channels globally for violating its community guidelines, the majority of which were spam-related. Additionally, more than 1.1 billion comments were removed globally for policy violations, with spam being the primary cause.
This global initiative resulted in considerable numbers of video deletions in other countries, with Singapore and the United States trailing India in terms of removal volume.
